The Mobility Shop: Toilet safety with frames and rails
The toilet can pose a serious threat when used by a person with a disability or impairment. Often the user will instinctively attempt to use the towel rack to assist with standing… sometimes with devastating consequences, like the whole rail ripping from the wall!
There are a number of items designed to make using a toilet easier, the first are toilet risers. These are generally made from plastic and attach to the porcelain by the way of two or more plastic screw-bolts. Toilet-raisers will increase the seat height by a fixed amount, usually 2 or 4 inches, to make standing up a little bit easier.
Another item you can buy to assist in this area is a toilet surround. These toilet surrounds are sturdy rails usually made from steel that surround the existing toilet. They are height adjustable via each leg and offer the user a strong support to help the user push them off the seat.
Finally there are the most-popular ‘over toilet frame’. Over-toilet frames encompass the best of both abovementioned items. They have four height-adjustable legs that allow for both the seat and rails to meet the users exact needs. It has a plastic-mounted seat that is now at an appropriate height for mounting and dismounting the toilet, and the sturdy rails allow the user to push and apply moderate force thereon to assist.
The Mobility Shop has a terrific range of toilet aids that will help make your home a safer place.
